Winter provides a stunning backdrop for outdoor photo sessions, with its crisp air, glistening snow, and soft natural light. Maybe there is no snow and it's just the blue air that adds a hue of coldness to the air. As a photographer, helping your clients choose the right attire can make a significant difference in the final outcome of their photos. Here's a comprehensive guide to styling for outdoor winter photo sessions from a photographer's perspective:
Layering is Key
I encourage my clients to dress in layers. Not only does this add visual interest to the photos, but it also provides flexibility if the weather changes. If it is FREEZING I suggest thermal undergarments, cozy sweaters, and stylish outerwear. Add a scarf, a warm textured beanie or some simple mittens to keep warm and add that winter wonderland look.
Textures and Fabrics
Opt for fabrics that not only look good but also keep you warm. Wool, cashmere, faux fur, and fleece are excellent choices. These materials add depth and texture to the images. Knit sweaters with a fitted wool coat is probably my favorite look for the ladies. Add some warm leggings and leather boots and not only does the outfit scream with texture, it keeps you from turning blue!
Neutral Tones and Earthy Colors
Choose a color palette that complements the winter landscape. Neutrals like grays, creams, and soft blues work beautifully against a snowy backdrop. Earthy tones like deep greens, burgundy, and camel can also create a warm and inviting feel. No one wears bright pink and neon in the winter, if you wouldn't wear it normally, it will look awkward in the photos. The color pallets that add to the wintery tones are always deep and earthy. However, a pop of color through accessories like scarves or mittens can add a playful touch.
Coordinated, Not Matching
While it's essential for outfits to complement each other, they don't need to match exactly. Select a cohesive color palette and then mix and match within that range. This allows for individuality while maintaining visual harmony. Let's say you went with blue, gray and cream. Put your hubby in a Blue sweater, you in a cream top with dark gray leggings and maybe your little in a gray sweater and Dark blue pants. Mix and match the tones, not all blues and grays need to be the same shade- mix it up! Nothing says a boring photos like when everyone shows up in the same sweater- the only exception to the rule is matching pajamas- that is always a win. However even the Christmas PJ's can be mixed and matched a little to avoid shots that just focus on your clothes and take away from your smiles.
Accessorize Wisely
Accessories play a crucial role in winter styling. Hats, scarves, gloves, and boots not only keep your subjects warm but also add visual interest to the photos. Choose accessories that complement your outfits and the overall aesthetic. If you are wearing a coat, find one with a belt or synched waist to avoid looking like a snowman. Or consider wearing the coat open if the weather allows.
Boots and Warm Footwear
Practical yet stylish footwear, like boots, that can handle snow and cold temperatures. Tall boots can create a chic and cozy look, while waterproof options will keep you comfortable throughout the session. I always tell people don't ever buy something you will wear once and never again. If you are buying a pair of boots that you love for photos- make sure it still looks like you. Is it something you'd never normally wear? Don't do it. If you are going to spend the money on an outfit, make sure it is something you can get use out of.
Mind the Details
Pay attention to the small details. Clean, well-maintained clothing and accessories will contribute to a polished overall look. Get the shirts pressed, the wrinkles out of the pants and the salt stains off of your footwear before the shoot. While photoshop is a nice tool, it can't fix everything. If you want your photos to look clean and crisp you need to show up that way!
Comfort is Key
Above all, dress in a way that makes them feel comfortable and confident. When people feel at ease in their outfits, it shines through in the photographs.
